Thirtyish

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Appearing or being somewhere around thirty years of age, neither clearly young nor clearly middle-aged
  2. Falling in the range of about thirty years old, typically used to describe a person's approximate age
  3. Roughly thirty in years, used when someone's exact age is unknown or not worth stating precisely

Etymology: "Thirtyish" is a plain formation: the numeral "thirty" with the suffix "-ish," which English attaches to numbers and other words to mean "roughly" or "approximately." The same suffix produces "fortyish," "sixtyish," and the older "fiftyish" pattern, so the word follows a regular rule rather than a special historical path. The suffix itself comes from Old English "-isc," meaning "belonging to" or "having the nature of," which also gave us "English," "British," and "childish." Over time its use widened from marking origin or kind to marking approximation, so "greenish" describes something only partly green, and "thirtyish" describes someone only roughly thirty.
