Thelred

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A male given name historically borne by several English kings noted for their roles in medieval history and governance
  2. A proper noun referring to notable Anglo-Saxon rulers in early English history, particularly associated with periods of conflict and leadership
  3. A personal name linked to early medieval English monarchs known for their reigns during challenging political and military times

Etymology: Æthelred is built from two Old English elements: "æþel," meaning noble, and "ræd," meaning counsel or advice. The name therefore meant something like "noble counsel," a hopeful choice for a royal son. Its most famous bearer, Æthelred II, was nicknamed "Unræd," a pun on his name. Because "ræd" also meant counsel, "unræd" suggested "poor counsel" or "no counsel," the reverse of what the name promised. Later writers rendered the nickname as "Unready," which suggests he was unprepared, a meaning the original wordplay did not carry.

Synonyms: king, monarch, ruler
