Etymology: Before "test" meant an exam, it meant a clay pot. Medieval French "test" referred to an earthen vessel, especially a pot in which metals were tried, and it came from Latin "testum", a lid or earthen pot. Metallurgists placed ore or metal in these vessels to assess its purity, and the idea of putting something to a decisive trial carried over from the furnace to the classroom. The English past form "tested" simply follows that verb. It carries the sense of having been checked for quality: a product, a batch, or a sample that has passed through a trial of its worth.
