Etymology: "Teniae" is the plural of "tenia," a Latin-derived term whose core meaning is a band or strip. The Latin word "tenia" (a variant of "taenia") came from the Greek "tainia," meaning a ribbon, fillet or headband, and the anatomical sense comes from the same idea of a narrow band of material. In anatomy, the plural form is the one most often seen, because the strips are usually found in groups. The best-known example is the "teniae coli," three bands of smooth muscle running along the outside of the large intestine. Each band is gathered up into a ribbon-like strip, which is why the bowel looks puckered at intervals between them. The term therefore keeps the original image of a ribbon, applied to tissue that gathers and holds the bowel in shape.
