Tehranian
Part of speech: adjective, noun
Definitions
- Of or belonging to Tehran, the capital city of Iran
- Characteristic of or connected with Tehran and its people or culture
- Relating to Tehran or its inhabitants
Etymology: Tehranian is a plain formation: the name of the Iranian capital, Tehran, with the suffix "-ian" attached to mark a person or thing connected with that place. The same pattern produces demonyms such as "Parisian" and "Lebanese"-style forms built on city names, so the word tells you where someone or something comes from rather than carrying any hidden meaning of its own. The suffix "-ian" came into English through Latin "-ianus", which was used to form adjectives meaning "belonging to" or "associated with" a name or place. English adopted it widely through Old French and directly from Latin, so it now attaches to many place names, and "Tehranian" follows that familiar model.
