  3. In solfège, the musical syllable assigned to the seventh step of a major scale before the octave

Etymology: The seventh note of the solfège scale was not always "te." For centuries it was "si," and the change happened in the 19th century for a rather practical reason. Because "si" begins with the same letter as "sol," and singers and teachers wanted each note name to be distinct, the syllable was altered so that the scale would no longer contain two names starting with the same letter. It shifted to "te" first, and later to "ti," the form most English speakers now know. The vowel itself carries a second twist. Once the seventh note was "ti," the vowel was changed to "e" to mark a flattened version of that note, so "te" in some traditions signals a lowered seventh rather than the plain one. The result is that the same syllable pattern now distinguishes between two pitches, a small piece of spelling-driven reform that ended up shaping how the scale is sung.
