Definitions

  1. A country located in East Africa known for its diverse landscapes and wildlife, including Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti National Park
  2. An East African nation bordered by the Indian Ocean recognized for its rich cultural heritage and significant historical sites
  3. A sovereign state in Africa renowned for its natural beauty, including beaches, mountains, and numerous national parks filled with various animal species

Etymology: Tanzania is a blend of two place names, and the country itself was created by joining them. In 1964, the former British territory of Tanganyika, which had gained independence in 1961, merged with the island state of Zanzibar, and the new nation took a name built from both. The first part comes from Tanganyika, and the middle comes from Zanzibar, with the Latin-style ending "-ia" added the way many country names are formed. The result is a name that keeps a memory of two separate states in one word. Neither half was chosen to stand alone, so the name records the act of union rather than the identity of either territory.
