Etymology: The drunken sense of "tanked" grew out of a much older image: a tank is simply a container for liquid, so to be "tanked" is to have been filled up. Its ancestor, the Portuguese "tanque", was a cistern or liquid container, borrowed from an Indo-Aryan language, probably Gujarati or Marathi, where words like "tanki" meant cistern. The metaphor of a person being filled to the brim with drink is what turns a water tank into a drinker's word. Tank did not start out as a military term. Its best-known modern sense came in 1915, when prototype armoured vehicles were officially described as water tanks, a deliberate cover story to disguise what they were and because they resembled such containers. The name stuck and largely displaced earlier terms such as "landship" and "battlewagon".
