Etymology: "Talkin" is a dropped-g spelling of "talking," the form of "talk" used as a verb, noun, or adjective with the "-ing" ending. The "-ing" ending came into Middle English as a way to form nouns and participles from verbs, and "talking" appears in Middle English as "talkynge" and "talkyng." The base "talk" is itself a Middle English word, so the whole form is a plain combination of an existing verb with a long-established suffix. The spelling "talkin" simply records the everyday pronunciation, where the final "g" is often not sounded in casual speech. Writers use it to suggest relaxed, colloquial speech, especially in dialogue, though it is not a separate word and carries no meaning of its own.
