Etymology: "Takynge" is a Middle English spelling of "taking," from a period when English spelling was not yet standardized, so the same word could appear in many forms. The verb behind it is the surprise: "take" was borrowed from Old Norse "taka" during the centuries of Scandinavian settlement in northern and eastern England, and it gradually displaced the native Old English verb "niman," which faded from everyday use. The ending comes from the Old English suffix "-ing," which turned verbs into nouns naming an action or process. So "taking" originally meant the act of seizing or receiving something. Its plural "takings," meaning money received from sales, is a later extension of that same sense of gathering in what is taken.
