Etymology: In ancient Greece, a "symbolon" was a token, often a piece of pottery or metal, broken in two so that each party could keep half. When the halves were later matched, they proved identity or confirmed an agreement. The noun descends from the verb "symballein," which is why the English word "symbol" carries the idea of a part that stands for a whole. The verb itself combines "syn," meaning "together," with "ballein," meaning "to throw." Its literal sense was to throw things together, and from there it came to mean to meet, to bring together, or to come to terms. Greek writers used it of people who clashed or conferred, and of contributions brought to a common fund.
