Syllabubs

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A sweet confection made by curdling cream or milk with wine, cider, or fruit juice, often served chilled in a glass
  2. A frothy dessert prepared by whipping cream together with alcohol and citrus juice until it forms a light, fluffy mixture
  3. A chilled pudding-like treat created by combining cream with wine or acidic fruit juice to produce a soft, curdled texture

Etymology: "Syllabubs" is the plural of "syllabub", a dessert of cream, sweetened and often flavoured with wine, cider or citrus, that is traditionally whipped or curdled into a light, airy froth. The plural form simply refers to multiple servings of this dish. The word's origin is unknown, and nobody has been able to trace it with confidence to a convincing source. Its spelling may have been shaped by association with "syllable", a completely unrelated word, which gives the term a curiously word-like look that its origin does not support. The dessert itself has also had variants over the centuries, including versions made with goat's cheese, lemon juice, zest and honey, showing how flexible the recipe has been.
