Etymology: "Syllabications" is simply the plural of "syllabication", a noun meaning the division of words into syllables. The base word is "syllable", which traces back through Latin "syllaba" to Greek "syllabē", a term meaning something gathered or held together, from "syn" ("together") and "lambanein" ("to take"). The division itself is what the word names: a syllable is a unit gathered out of the flow of speech, and syllabication is the act of breaking words back into those units. The noun was formed in Medieval Latin as "syllabicātio", the action noun of the verb "syllabicō", which was built on "syllaba". English first recorded the word in 1631, borrowing it with the same sense of dividing a word into its syllables.
