Etymology: Swabia is the English name for a region in southwestern Germany, and "Swabian" is simply that name with the suffix "-an" added, meaning a person or thing belonging to it. The suffix has a long pedigree: it traces back through Proto-Italic and Latin "-anus" and Old French "-ain" before reaching English as "-an," which is why so many place-based adjectives end the same way. The root "Swabia" comes from the Germanic people known as the Suebi (or Suevi), whose name gave the region its identity.
