Surroundingly
Part of speech: adverb
Definitions
- Characterizing the act of enclosing or encompassing an area or object
- Relating to the conditions or elements that are present around a specific focus or center
- Describing the atmosphere or environment that envelops a particular subject or situation
Etymology: "Surround" began as a picture of water. It comes from Old French "suronder," meaning to overflow or flood, built from "sur-" ("over") and "onder" ("to flow in waves"), which goes back to Latin "unda," a wave. A flood that spreads over land on every side made a natural image for enclosing something, and English took the encircling sense from that root. This adverb is built on the present participle "surrounding," as in "the surrounding hills," with the adverbial ending "-ly" added. It describes doing something in a way that encloses or encompasses. Its form is transparent, so it needs no separate history of its own.
