Etymology: The French verb descends from Late Latin "superprehendere," built from "super," meaning "over" or "above," and "prehendere," meaning "to seize." To surprise someone was to seize them from above, overtaking them before they could react, which fits the verb's sense of catching someone off guard. The same Latin stem gave English several words that look unrelated. "Apprehend" once meant to seize a person by force, and "comprehend" meant to grasp something mentally, so one physical grip lies behind arrest, understanding, and the sudden discovery that the French verb still carries. "Prehensile," describing a tail or fingers able to grasp, comes from the same root.
