Supraconscious

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Lying beyond ordinary awareness, relating to a level of mind or experience above the normal conscious state
  2. Describing a state of mind or existence that transcends everyday waking awareness and ordinary perception
  3. Situated above or beyond the reach of normal consciousness, as in a higher or transcendent mental realm

Etymology: "Supraconscious" is a plain formation: the Latin prefix "supra-", meaning "above" or "beyond", attached to "conscious". The result describes something that lies above or beyond ordinary consciousness, rather than below it as the more familiar "subconscious" does. The Latin prefix is the same one found in words like "supernatural" and "supervise", so the word's structure is transparent: a mental state or faculty placed higher than the everyday awareness that a person can reach by thinking. Its opposite number, "subconscious", uses the prefix "sub-" ("under") and is the older and far more widely used of the pair, which is why "supraconscious" often reads as its deliberate counterpart.
