Etymology: "Superstructural" is a plain formation: it is the adjective "superstructural", built from "superstructure" with the adjective-forming suffix "-al" added to the end. The base noun is itself a compound of "super-", meaning "above" or "over", and "structure", so the word literally describes what sits above a structure's foundations. Its meaning follows directly from that parts-list: it refers to the upper parts of a building, or, more broadly, to the parts of a larger system that rest on a more basic layer. The word therefore needs no hidden story. Its sense stays close to the physical image of a building, with the abstract applications in social or economic theory coming from the same picture of an upper layer resting on a base. Used with "superstructure" and "base" or "substructure", it is most often seen in architecture and, in a specialised way, in Marxist thought, where it describes the cultural and political layer built on an economic base.
