Etymology: "Superrational" is about as transparent as English compounds get: the prefix "super-" (from Latin "super", meaning "above" or "beyond") attached to "rational", which comes from Latin "rationalis", from "ratio" meaning reason or calculation. Put together, the word describes reasoning that goes beyond ordinary rational thought. The real interest lies in how the prefix behaves. "Super-" is a productive prefix in English, so it can be bolted onto nearly any adjective to mean "to an excessive or extraordinary degree," as in "supernatural" or "superhuman." Here it signals a level of reasoning that outstrips the ordinary, a sense that the thinker is operating on a higher plane than everyday logic allows.
