Superpluses

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A plural form referring to multiple instances of an excess or surplus beyond what is necessary or expected
  2. Designating more than one occurrence of something additional that exceeds a standard limit or requirement
  3. Indicating various excesses that go beyond a certain point, often used in contexts where additional amounts are significant

Etymology: "Superpluses" is simply the plural of "superplus," a noun meaning extra amounts left over after needs are met. The singular form comes from Medieval Latin "superplus," which was itself a calque, a word-for-word copy, of the Old French "surplus." The Latin version literally assembled "super" (over, beyond) and "plus" (more) from the same stock of parts as the French original. The French "surplus" is the older form, and English took "surplus" directly from it, so "superplus" is effectively a Latinized twin of the more familiar word. Its plural follows the regular English pattern, with "-es" added after the final "s" sound.
