  2. Connected with or situated beyond the central core of an atom ; involving energies, reactions, or conditions that extend past the nuclear level ; indicating phenomena that transcend the nucleus in scope or magnitude

Etymology: Strip away the prefix and the core of the word is a nut. Latin "nux" meant nut, and "nucleus" was its diminutive, a little nut, later applied to the kernel inside a fruit or seed. "Nuclear" comes from that same kernel sense. Only in modern physics did "nucleus" come to name the dense central core of an atom. The prefix is Latin "super," meaning "above" or "over," which English uses in words like "superhuman" and "superimpose." Joined to "nuclear," it describes something lying above or beyond the atomic nucleus.

Synonyms: transnuclear, superatomic, ultranuclear

Antonyms: subnuclear, intranuclear
