Sulphurising

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. Treating a substance by adding sulphur to it, or combining it with sulphur in a chemical process
  2. Exposing or mixing material with sulphur so that a chemical reaction or change takes place
  3. Adding sulfur to something, often as part of vulcanizing rubber or preserving and bleaching materials

Etymology: This is the present participle and gerund of "sulphurise," a verb meaning to treat or combine with sulphur. The verb is simply the noun "sulphur" with the suffix "-ise" added. That suffix came through a long chain: from Ancient Greek "-izō," through Late Latin "-izō," into Old French as "-iser," and then into Middle English as "-isen." English later attached it to "sulphur" to form the verb.
