Etymology: Sugarbush is a compound of two plain English words: "sugar" and "bush." The "bush" here is the older sense of a cluster of growing shrubs or trees, the same sense that gives us a stand of trees rather than the Australian wilderness. Put together, the name describes a grove of maples tapped for their sap, and the sugar is the point: the sap is boiled down into maple syrup and maple sugar. The compound is transparent in a way many English words are not. Nobody had to invent a metaphor or borrow a learned root to name the thing; the grove was simply a bush of sugar-producing trees. That plainness is why the word has stayed close to its literal meaning, unlike older words whose parts have drifted far from their sense.
