Etymology: "Substantia" comes from Latin "substare," meaning "to stand under," built from "sub" (under) and "stare" (to stand). A substantia was therefore whatever lies beneath something and holds it up, which is why the Latin term could describe both the material stuff of an object and the underlying reality beneath its visible qualities. Medieval philosophers leaned on that second sense. Latin writers used "substantia" to translate Greek terms for the fundamental being of a thing, so a quality such as whiteness was understood to depend on an underlying substance that carried it. The idea of something bearing the weight of what rests on it is the thread that leads to the modern sense of a crucial support underlying an idea.
