Etymology: "Subscribes" is the third-person singular form of "subscribe", so its history is that of the verb itself. The verb came into Middle English from Latin "subscrībere", meaning "write beneath", built from "sub" ("under") and "scribere" ("to write"). The sense of putting one's name under a document, and so agreeing to it, is the root of the modern meaning. Signing beneath a statement was how a person gave it their formal approval, and that approval is still what "subscribes" conveys when someone lends support to a cause or idea. English has a native counterpart in "underwrite", which works the same way: to write one's name under a document in order to guarantee or support it. The Latin and English words are a close parallel, each built on the image of writing underneath.
