Etymology: "Subregions" is simply the plural of "subregion," a noun for a smaller area within a larger region. Its history is plain: it is a compound formed in English from the prefix "sub-" and "region." The prefix comes from Latin "sub," meaning "under" or "below," which itself descends from an ancient root shared with the Greek "hypo," so the sense of something lying beneath or within is built right into the word. "Region" has its own Latin pedigree, coming from "regio," meaning a direction, boundary or district, derived from "regere," to rule or to guide in a straight line. The idea of a bounded territory is therefore already present in the older word. Adding "sub-" simply narrows the scope, turning a district into a district inside a district.
