Etymology: "Subpixels" is the plural of "subpixel," a noun for the small parts that make up a single pixel. The prefix "sub-" comes from Latin, where it means "under" or "beneath," and it is attached here to "pixel," the word for the smallest addressable dot on a screen or digital image. The base word "pixel" is itself a blend of "picture" and "element," shortened to "pix" and joined with "el." Engineers used it to name the basic unit of a digital image, so a subpixel is simply a part of that unit, lying beneath the level of the whole dot. On many colour screens, each pixel is divided into subpixels, typically red, green and blue, which together produce the colour the viewer sees.
