Etymology: "Sublayers" is the plural of "sublayer," a noun and verb formed by joining the prefix "sub-" (from Latin "sub," meaning "under" or "below") to "layer." The combination is transparent: a sublayer is simply a layer beneath another. "Layer" itself is the older part of the pair. It descends from the Old English "lecgan," meaning "to lay or place," so a layer is literally something that has been laid down. Adding "sub-" to that base gives a compound whose parts both carry their original senses, which is why the word reads so plainly in geology, software design and materials science alike.
