Etymology: "Suber" is the technical name for cork, the spongy outer bark of the cork oak. The Latin "sūber" meant the same thing, and the word has passed into English more or less unchanged in its core sense, mostly within botanical and scientific writing. The cork oak itself, "Quercus suber", carries the name in its species epithet, which is why the Latin term keeps surfacing in botany and forestry texts rather than everyday speech. Because the word was taken directly from Latin, it retains the Roman association with the tree and its bark, rather than the English "cork" that came into the language separately from a different source. That split gives English two words for one material, and "suber" sounds more formal and specialist in use.
