Subensemble

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A smaller group selected from a larger ensemble, typically referring to a subset of musicians or performers within a larger musical group
  2. A distinct section taken from a complete assembly, especially used to describe a portion of members from a larger performing group
  3. An organized component derived from a greater collective, commonly applied to a select portion of individuals within a broad ensemble setting

Etymology: "Subensemble" is a plain compound: "sub-" (from Latin "sub", meaning "under" or "below") attached to "ensemble," which comes from French "ensemble," meaning "together" or "a whole," itself from Latin "insimul," "at the same time." The prefix therefore marks a smaller unit placed beneath the larger group, so a subensemble is a smaller group drawn from a bigger ensemble. The word's sense of a group performing together is itself a shift. "Ensemble" in English began as a word for the overall effect of a whole, and only later narrowed to a company of performers or a unified set of clothing. Adding "sub-" reverses that broad sense, pointing back toward the parts that make up the whole.
