Subdelegate

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To assign specific duties or powers to another person, thereby enabling them to act in a representative capacity during the execution of certain tasks
  2. To transfer authority or responsibility to a subordinate who can act on one's behalf
  3. To entrust a lower-ranking individual with specific tasks or powers for execution

Etymology: "Subdelegate" is a compound of the prefix "sub-", meaning "under" or "below," and "delegate," which comes from Latin "delegare," to send away or assign to another. The prefix works in the familiar way: a subdelegate is someone to whom a delegate passes authority further down a chain of command, so the word describes a second layer of delegation rather than a new kind of agent. Because "delegate" itself was already in English before this combination, "subdelegate" needed no separate invention to make sense. Its structure is transparent, and speakers can build meaning directly from its two halves, which is why it has stayed a plain, technical-sounding term in administrative and legal writing.
