Etymology: "Subcategorization" is the plural of "subcategorization", a noun formed by adding the prefix "sub-" (from Latin "sub", meaning "under" or "below") to "categorization". So the word is literally a sorting beneath a sorting: once a general category has been defined, subcategorization splits it into smaller groups that sit under it. The base word goes back to Greek "katēgoria", meaning an assertion or predicate, which came into Latin as "categoria" and reached English through Late Latin and Old French. Over time it came to mean a class or division of things. "Categorize" and "categorization" were built on that noun in English, and adding "sub-" creates the sense of refining an existing category into finer parts.
