Etymology: "Subboards" is the plural of "subboard," itself built from the prefix "sub-" (meaning under, or subordinate to) attached to "board." The base word "board" traces back to Old English "bord," a plank or flat piece of timber, and over centuries it came to mean a surface set aside for a particular purpose, such as a notice board, a council, or a circuit board. Attaching "sub-" to it creates the sense of a smaller division operating beneath a larger one. The online and electronic senses grew naturally from this older usage. A forum that sits inside a larger platform, or a section of a notice board devoted to one kind of announcement, is a subordinate board in exactly this sense. The plural form simply refers to several such divisions at once, which is why the word appears so often in discussions of how large message platforms are organized.
