The chain begins in Latin "stilus," a writing instrument, and the same ancestor gave English "style," which once meant a pointed tool for scratching letters onto wax tablets. The Italian diminutive is the telling detail. A pointed writing implement shrank into a small, narrow blade, and that blade was then carried over into a weapon name, the "stiletto" dagger that became famous in Renaissance Italy.
