Structurize

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. Arranging the parts of something into a coherent, organized framework so that its elements relate to one another in a systematic way
  2. Giving a system or body of material a defined shape or hierarchy so that its components are ordered and connected logically
  3. Imposing an orderly structure on a collection of ideas, data or objects so that they form a unified and deliberate whole

Etymology: "Structurize" is a plain formation: the noun "structure" with the verb-forming suffix "-ize" attached, giving the sense "to arrange into a structure." "Structure" itself came into English from Latin "structura," a building or arrangement, from "struere," to build or pile up, so the verb is a built-up word on a long-established base. The suffix does most of the work here. "-ize" comes through Latin "-izare" from Greek "-izein," and it turns a noun into a verb meaning to make or cause something to become what the noun describes, so "structurize" means to give something structure. The same pattern produces "organize" from "organ" or "standardize" from "standard."
