Etymology: "Strongylus" is a genus name coined in modern scientific taxonomy, not an ancient word, and it comes from Greek "strongylos," meaning "round." The name was given by the naturalist Carl Linnaeus's successors in the 18th and 19th centuries as a descriptive label for these worms, whose bodies are cylindrical and rounded in cross-section, unlike the flattened bodies of flatworms. The Greek root is also the source of the Greek adjective "strongylos" used of anything rounded or spherical, which is why the genus was named for the shape of its members. The same root turns up in modern English through the word "strongyle," a term sometimes used for worms of this general type.
