Stringens
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- Characterizing something that is constrictive or binding in nature, often referring to strict rules or guidelines
- Describing an element that imposes limitations or restrictions upon others
- Pertaining to a quality of severity or rigor that imposes a certain level of discipline or control
Etymology: In Latin, "stringere" meant "to draw tight" or "to bind fast," and its present participle, "stringens," described something pulling taut. The same verb produced the past participle "strictus," which is the source of English "strict," so the two words are close relatives. English "stringent" took the participle's figurative sense. Something stringent imposes tight limits on others, such as a rule, a budget, or a requirement. A physical bond has become a restriction on conduct, leaving little room for movement.
