Etymology: Steelworks is about as transparent as compounds get: it joins "steel" and "works," where "works" in this sense means a factory or plant for making things. The older English noun "work" carried the meaning of a place of labour long before industrial sites existed, so a steelworks is literally a place where steel is made. The pattern is old and productive, which is why English has so many similar formations such as ironworks, gasworks and waterworks. The "works" ending is also a useful clue to how the word behaves. Because it is a plural form used as a singular name for a site, you can say a steelworks is closing without it implying several separate works. Each steelworks is one facility, even though the final letter suggests more than one.
