Sportsdom

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The sphere of organized athletic competition, professional teams, and sporting culture
  2. The domain encompassing all aspects of athletic events, athletes, and sports-related institutions
  3. The collective world of competitive sports, athletes, and the entertainment and industry surrounding them

Etymology: "Sportsdom" is a plain compound: the noun "sports" combined with the suffix "-dom," which comes from Old English "-dōm" and means a state, condition, or realm, as in "kingdom" or "freedom." Put together, the word describes the realm or world of sport, the whole community of athletes, fans, officials, and the institutions that surround them. The suffix is the more interesting half. "-dom" once existed as a standalone noun meaning "judgment" or "statute," and its sense of "domain" grew out of that. Attaching it to "sports" follows the same pattern as older formations like "kingdom" and "stardom," so the word reads at once as "the sphere of sports" without needing any special coinage story.
