Etymology: Broadcasting began as a farming term. To broadcast was to fling seed across a field by hand so it scattered widely. When radio later sent voices out in every direction, the term moved from the field to the airwaves, and a radio announcer became a broadcaster. This compound puts "sports" in front of that "-caster" ending, which is a shortened form of "broadcaster." The sportscaster is therefore someone who sows a game's action across the airwaves, scattering commentary to listeners who cannot see the event themselves.
