Etymology: "Spirting" is the present participle and gerund of "spirt", so its history is that of the verb it comes from. "Spirt" is a variant spelling of "spurt", and the two have long shared the same meaning: a sudden, forceful gush of liquid, or a brief burst of effort or speed. The verb is the older form in English usage of this sense, and the spelling "spirt" has long been used alongside "spurt" for the same word. Used this way, the participle describes something in the middle of that sudden outflow, as in water spirting from a cracked pipe, or a runner spirting forward in a final sprint. The gerund form works the same way when used as a noun for the action itself.
