Etymology: "Spinmeister" is a compound of "spin" and the German-derived suffix "-meister," meaning "master" or "expert," as in "Meistersinger" or "Obermeister." The "spin" half carries the real story. Its sense of a favourable interpretation deliberately placed on an unpleasant event, meant to shape public opinion, is what gives the word its political edge. A "spinmeister" is therefore someone expert at that shaping, the person who turns a bad day for a politician or company into a manageable story. "Spinmaster" is a close relative with the same meaning, and the two are doublets, formed separately from the same material in slightly different ways rather than one borrowed from the other.
