Etymology: "Spheronize" is a technical coinage, not an ancient word. It is formed from "sphere," which entered English in the 14th century from Old French "sphere," from Latin "sphaera," itself borrowed from Greek "sphaira," meaning ball or globe. The suffix "-ize," from Greek "-izein" through Latin and French, turns a noun into a verb meaning "to make or treat in a certain way." Combined, the verb means to make something into spheres. The word belongs to pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing, where it describes a specific process: a granulated powder is fed onto a rotating disc or into a cylinder, where friction and moisture round the particles into uniform beads. Those beads flow more easily, pack more consistently, and dissolve in predictable ways, which matters for tablets and capsules. The term was coined in the twentieth century, when such equipment came into industrial use, so its history is that of the process rather than of any older everyday usage.
