Spedily

Part of speech: adverb

Definitions

  1. Done in a prompt manner, with little or no wasted time before the action is carried out
  2. Carried out swiftly and promptly, moving or acting at a rapid pace to finish something
  3. Accomplished without delay, in a hurry to get the task completed as soon as possible

Etymology: Before "speed" meant rapidity, it meant success or prosperity. The Old English noun "spēd" carried that sense, and it survives in the old wish "God speed," which means "may you succeed." The sense of quickness developed later, and it was that quickness that gave rise to the adjective "speedy," from "speed" plus the suffix "-y." "Spedily" is an older spelling of "speedily," the adverb formed from "speedy" by adding "-ly." The form with a dropped "e" reflects an older spelling pattern in English, where the vowel was written less consistently than it is today.
