Soyjak
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A crude internet meme showing a man with an exaggerated, grinning or sneering face, used to mock or express emotion online
- An image macro of a caricatured man with a wide, smug or contorted expression, widely shared on imageboards to ridicule
- A stylized online caricature of a balding man with an exaggerated face, used in forums and memes to mock or react to others
Etymology: Soyjak is a blend of two internet meme figures: "soy boy" and "wojak." The first is a slur-like insult for a man seen as effeminate or unassertive, and its "soy" element is a joke about soy products. The second is "wojak," a simple cartoon of a bald, sad-faced man, which came from Polish "wojak," meaning "soldier" or "warrior," and which is a Slavic word built on the old root for "war" that also appears in other Slavic languages. The soyjak is the wojak's counterpart: a cartoon of a bald man with an excited, wide-mouthed, open-mouthed expression. Blending the two names was a joke that set the excited face against the sad one, the ironic reversal being the point. The word itself is therefore not a dictionary coinage but an internet meme name, and its history is a matter of online usage rather than any older language.
