Etymology: Sori is the plural of "sorus", the botanical term for the cluster of spore-producing sacs that forms on the underside of a fern frond. The name is a New Latin coinage from the Greek "sōros", which meant a heap or pile, such as a heap of grain. Botanists chose it because each cluster looks like a small heap on the leaf. The same Greek root sits behind "sorites", the name of a logical puzzle about how many grains make a heap. If one grain does not make a heap, adding grains one at a time never seems to create one, yet a large pile plainly is a heap. Greek "sōros" could also mean a burial urn or coffin, a sense that did not carry into the botanical term.
