Etymology: The term grows out of German guild culture. "Meistersinger" was the name for members of craft guilds of amateur poet-musicians who, in towns such as Nuremberg, followed strict rules for composing and performing songs. Guild masters examined and judged these singers, so the title came to mark professional rank as much as talent. The English form appears to be a compound of "song" and "meister," the German word for "master," so it literally means a master of song. Richard Wagner's opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" brought the German idea to a wide audience, and the English term has kept its association with a figure who shapes and judges vocal music. The exact route into English is uncertain.
