Etymology: The Greek "soloikismos" comes from "soloikos," meaning someone who speaks incorrectly, and the name is tied to Soloi, a city on the coast of Cilicia in what is now southern Turkey. Ancient writers said that the Greek spoken there had been corrupted by the local languages, so that the city's name became a byword for bad speech. The Greek grammarians and rhetoricians who later named and classified these errors kept the term for faults of syntax and grammatical construction. Errors in the form of individual words were called "barbarisms," so a solecism was the more serious fault of arranging words wrongly.
