Etymology: The name is a plain compound of "soldier" and "fish", and the logic behind it is visible in the animal itself. Soldierfishes (family Holocentridae) are nocturnal reef dwellers that shelter in crevices and caves by day, and their brick-red or scarlet coloring looks like the uniform of a redcoat, which is probably where the image comes from. Their large eyes and sharp dorsal spines add to the impression of a small, armored guard standing watch over the reef. The word "soldier" itself came into English from Old French "soldier" (later "soudier"), ultimately from Medieval Latin "solidarius", a term for a man who received pay, or "solidus" coins, for military service. So the fish is named after a paid fighter, a sense that has nothing to do with the fish's own behavior, only its appearance.
