Etymology: "Sojourned" is simply the past tense and past participle of "sojourn", so the story belongs to the verb itself. The base word traces back to Latin "dies", meaning "day". Late Latin "diurnus" ("lasting for a day") grew from it, and a prefix "sub-" ("under, a little over") was attached to form the assumed Vulgar Latin "subdiurnare". The idea behind it was staying somewhere for a day or so, a short stop rather than a settled residence. That sense passed into Old French as "sojorner" (modern "séjourner"), and Middle English borrowed it as "sojournen". The word therefore kept its core meaning of a temporary stay while the spelling and pronunciation changed along the way.
